Maybe I can’t take as much time as I would like to stop everything and just “Be”. Maybe I am letting things fall between the cracks while I am busy concentrating on what I think needs to be done. Maybe... Probably, I need to be more aware of this and not let things slip by me.

Today while watching Alayna sit quietly and read in her reading fort (an idea I had that would be fun for them and also allow me to get some work done uninterrupted) I saw something peaceful and sweet. I saw my little preschooler reading. I noticed that while I’ve been working and taking classes, all the while thinking I’m doing this all for the best of my family, I too am missing the small stuff. This is the last year that she’ll be home with me before starting kindergarten. In this past year she has grown by leaps and bounds. She is taller, she is smarter, she is looking more like a little girl and less like a toddler. She has learned how to write all her letters and is forming words. Today she was READING! Where did the time go? How did this sneak up on me without me even seeing it coming. I missed something, and I don’t want to miss anything else.

I don’t get a chance to photograph my own children often. I set up yearly photo shoots and take “portraits”. Trying to get the perfect picture and sift through a million proofs to find the perfect shot. Then I blow it up and display it. There… done for the year. Although I do love the “perfect canvas”, the pictures that pull on my heart strings are usually the ones I took with my iphone of us having fun and living. I will do my best to find a better balance. I will do my best to take more pictures of my own family. And I want to be there to help other families capture and save the “small stuff”.
